Self-immolator Ngawang Norphel Dies

DHARAMSHALA: Ngawang Norphel, who set himself on fire with Tenzin Khedup at Yushul, north-eastern Tibet on 20 June, succumbed to his burn injuries yesterday in a hospital in Siling.

Ngawang Norphel and Tenzin Khedup set themselves on fire carrying Tibetan national flags and calling for the long life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and freedom for Tibetans.

Tenzin Khedup died on the spot that day, while Ngawang Norphel sustained serious injuries.

Ngawang Norphel was initially taken care of by the monks of Silkar monastery, but he was later admitted to a hospital in Siling.

His last rites were conducted early this morning.

Ngawang Norphel is from Nyalam, Shigatse and has been living in Yushul since 2008.

Since 2009, 44 Tibetans have set themselves on fire in Tibet while shouting slogans demanding the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Tibet and freedom of Tibetans.
